The nose has a touch of sweetness initially but that quickly moves into the background in favour of a barley quality, although a deeper, earthier barley than usual. There is just a touch of a metallic quality there also which helps to bring the lightness out a bit. After a while the sweetness begins to reveal itself again as a touch of madeira strangely as I don’t think they use ex-Madeira casks at all.
The palate continues on where the nose left off really. Medium weight with plenty of barley and a Madeira sweetness. It is quite smooth, handling the 46% ABV quite well with the spice qualities coming through mid palate.
The finish as a medium length where the spice comes through with a slight dryness to it.
For a inaugural release I am very impressed. I initially bought 2 bottles with the intention of putting a bottle up but that never happened, I just drank them both instead which is probably enough praise for any whisky I guess.
